The Sheriff’s Department is mourning the loss of the venerated personality who suffered a rare type of stroke last month and was on the road to recovery.

Who was Raymond Leyva?

Raymond Leyva was the retired Executive Officer of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office. He had been serving the duties of retired Undersheriff since 2018. He was also a Past-National President of the Hispanic American Police Command Officers Association.

Additionally, he also served as the President of the Southern California Chapter of HAPCOA, the Los Angeles County Chicano Employees Association, the Professional Peace Officers Association, and member of several other Law Enforcement Associations.

Leyva was a graduate of California State University and completed his Master’s in Business Administration at Pepperdine University. He also graduated from several leadership programs  and had extensive training in Emergency Management Protocols.

He started his career as a reserve officer with Los Angeles Police Department in 1975 and got transferred to the Sheriff’s Department in 1981. Leyva was promoted to Lieutenant in 1990 and was promoted to Captain for Court Services West Bureau in 1999.

In 2012, Leyva got promoted to the position of Commander and assigned to Field Operations Region I. He retired from the Department after 35 years of service in 2016.

Raymond Leyva died on Wednesday, October 12, 2022. The unfortunate news of his passing was announced by the LA County Sheriff’s Department earlier today.

The Office of the Sheriff is saddened to announce the passing of retired Executive Officer Raymond Leyva.  Mr. Leyva passed away on Wednesday, October 12, 2022,” the press release confirming his death states.

What was the cause of Raymond Leyva’s death?

The cause of Raymond Leyva’s death is unknown at the time of writing as neither his family nor the Sheriff’s Office released it. Social media users are speculating that Leyva died after suffering another stroke while he was recovering from the previous one.

On September 2, 2022, Leyva suffered a rare type of stroke while exercising at a gym in Alpine. He suddenly started feeling ill and was rushed to an Alpine hospital via ambulance. He was intubated at the medical facility and the initial belief was that he was having an aneurysm.

However, the doctors later revealed that it was a rare type of stroke where Leyva experienced a major brain bleed and brain trauma. The latest tests confirmed that he suffered an AVM Stroke, also known as an Arteriovenous Malformation stroke.

Leyva remained in the hospital for over half a month and was recovering. Although the recovery was a bit slow, his condition was getting better before he passed away last week.
