Tom Volks Obituary

Thomas J. Volk was born in Girard, Ohio, on January 28, 1959, and passed away in La Crosse, Wisconsin, on November 28, 2022. He achieved real professional standing as a mycologist after receiving his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, along with a postdoc (both with Tom Leonard), a second postdoc at the USDA Forest Products Laboratory, Madison (with Hal Burdsall), and a professorship at the University of Wisconsin, La Crosse. At mushroom forays, where he helped many enthusiastic amateurs learn more about fungus, he was a well-liked expert.

Tom gained notoriety early in his career for his “Fungus of the Month” columns, which he started 25 years ago in January 1997. This outstanding series revealed facts such as Bob Dylan previously suffered from Histoplasma capsulatum lung ailment, dog vomit was actually sporangia mass of the slime mold Fuligo septica, and a basidiomycete resembled a section of male dog anatomy. Yeasts to ferment chocolate for St. Valentine’s Day, Salem witches’ Claviceps purpurea in October, and mycorrhizae fungus for Christmas trees in December were all appropriate examples of fungi.

the website toms_fungi.botany.wisc.edu had numerous fungal photos for teaching, which Tom made available to the mycological community, ranging from early divergent groups through various types of basidiomycetes.

Tom used his website as a channel for communication with his large audience. He detailed his severe medical issues, including his “Transplant Experience” with the heart transplant that extended his life for 16 years.

Tom generously donated time and money to mycology as part of his philanthropic efforts to advance medical mycology. Additionally, he donated money to the Blue Stars Drum and Bugle Corps. The Blue Stars Hall of Fame inducted him as a mark of respect. Tom received the MSA Fellow designation and was a lock for the Weston Award for Excellence in Teaching Mycology; the North
