Who was Kathy Whitworth?
Kathy Whitworth joined the Ladies Professional Golf Association tour in 1958 when it was still a very small operation. She went on to become one of the most successful players in both women’s and men’s golf history, winning 88 tournaments over her lengthy career. Her incredible talent earned her recognition as the AP Female Athlete of the Year in 1965 and 1967 – an honor she shared with Wimbledon champion Billie Jean King. In 1982, she was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame for her many accomplishments.
One of Whitworth’s most impressive achievements was that she finished first or second in 144 tournaments throughout her professional career. This includes an incredible streak between 1966 and 1968 when she won 23 consecutive tournaments – something that no other player has ever achieved before or since. To put this feat into perspective, legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus only won 18 tournaments during that same period!
Whitworth also had a deep commitment to giving back to those around her. Over her career, she donated more than $3 million to charities through golf-related events. She also established scholarship funds for aspiring female golfers who wanted to pursue their dreams but lacked resources to do so.

I read today where your long time roommate Kathy Whitworth passed away today. I remember seeing Kathy coming by the gym, not realizing what a famous icon she was, but instead thinking how tall and athletic you both were. I happened to be at the dinner theatre one night and saw you both with another couple (of women) laughing and having a blast. I was awestruck and still am. I hope heaven has a golf course and y’all play a round together in happiness and peace.
