Who was Robert Pierce?
Robert Pierce was an iconic figure in American history. He was born on October 8th, 1914 in Fort Dodge, Iowa and is best known for founding two major international charity organizations, World Vision International and Samaritan’s Purse. From 1937 to 1940, Robert Pierce traveled across California as an evangelist. During this time, he developed a passion for helping those who were in need and providing them with a spiritual message of hope. After his ordination as a Baptist minister in 1940, he became involved with the Los Angeles branch of the World War II-era “Youth for Christ” (YFC) movement. This organization sought to bring young people together through Christian fellowship and activities while providing them with spiritual guidance.
In 1950, Robert Pierce founded World Vision International (WVI). WVI sought to provide long-term aid to impoverished communities by focusing on sustainable development initiatives such as health care, education, and economic opportunities. The organization has since grown into one of the world’s largest relief organizations which serves over 100 million people around the globe each year.
Then in 1970, Robert Pierce founded Samaritan’s Purse which provides short-term relief during disasters such as earthquakes or floods and also works with local churches to build long-term relationships with those affected by disaster or poverty. In 1978, Robert Pierce’s life was in turmoil. He had been going through marital issues and chose to temporarily move away from his family. But then, he was diagnosed with blood cancer that caused his wife, Lorraine, a great deal of worry. Reluctantly, Robert agreed to one last reunion with his loved ones. Sadly, tragically and almost unbelievably, he died only four days after the reunion due to leukemia.
