Who was Tonya Ingram?
Tonya Ingram was born in Cincinnati and raised in Bronx, New York. She held a Bachelor’s degree from New York University and a Master’s degree in Public Practice from Otis College of Art & Design. As an advocate of mental health, she used her powerful words to bring awareness to this important issue.
Tonya’s career was full of accomplishments that made her stand out among other poets of her time. She won the 2011 New York Knicks Poetry Slam championship, was a member and co-founder of NYU’s poetry slam team as well as part of the 2011 Urban Word-NYC team, 2013 Nuyorican Grand Slam team and 2015 Da Poetry Lounge Slam team. As if these weren’t enough achievements for one lifetime–Tonya also became a six-time poetry slam finalist, 2014 Pushcart Prize nominee and author of Growl and Snare.
To top it off, Tonya had a huge heart for animals–she was an avid fan of Tom Hardy films and The Office TV show!

The passing of Tonya Ingram has come as a shock to all who knew her. Despite Tonya’s prolonged battle with Lupus, the cause of her death has yet to be determined. What we do know is that there have been several online statements confirming that she succumbed to the disease and was pronounced dead earlier this week. As of now, the family has not issued a definitive statement on the matter and what was the cause behind her untimely passing remains unknown.
In addition to being an incredible artist, Tonya was also waiting on a kidney transplant which she sadly never received before passing away suddenly and unexpectedly on January 3rd 2023.

really sad to hear about the passing of tonya ingram, a poet who radiated such light and generosity, and was one of the first writers to show me that poetry was something I could do.
I have such distinct memories of watching her perform poems when I was 14. rest easy, tonya
