Who was Joseph Kapacziewski?
Joseph Kapacziewski was born on November 30, 1982 to parents Stephen and Susan Kapacziewski and grew up on a small farm in Durham, CT with his older sister Erin and younger brother Randy. He attended Bristol Eastern High School where he developed a passion for wrestling and played football. After graduating high school in 2001, Joe enlisted in the US Army and began his military career as a U.S. Army Ranger.
Tragic Accident
In 2005, while serving in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom as an infantryman assigned to B Company 1-25 Infantry Regiment (Stryker Brigade Combat Team), tragedy struck for Joe when he stepped on an IED during combat operations that resulted in severe injuries to his left leg leaving him without it from the thigh down. Despite this injury, Joe continued to serve honorably until 2013 when he retired from active duty after completing 20 years of service with three medals of valor – two Purple Hearts and one Bronze Star Medal with Valor Device – attached to his name.
Legacy & Accomplishments
Following his military career, Joe dedicated himself to helping other wounded veterans by becoming an advocate for adaptive sports programs like Wounded Warrior Project’s Adaptive Sports Program which encourages wounded warriors to participate in activities regardless of their physical limitations or disabilities. He became involved with several organizations such as SoldierStrong which provides advanced medical technology solutions to injured veterans; American Trigger Pullers which promotes veteran mental health; Israel Del Toro Jr., who introduced adaptive sports opportunities for veterans; and Warfighter Made which creates custom recreational vehicle conversions for disabled veterans.
In addition, Joe also wrote two books about his experiences as a disabled veteran titled “Warrior Code: My Journey Through Hell To Become A Better Man” and “The Warrior Code 2: Finding Strength & Purpose Through Adversity” both published posthumously shortly after his death on January 23rd 2021 at age 40 due to complications related to COVID-19 infection acquired while serving as a volunteer firefighter in Coventry Fire Department located near Storrs Connecticut University campus where he worked since 2014 until present day .
