The sudden death of George Wythe High School Principal Riddick Parker has left the Richmond community heartbroken. Parker, 50, was an Emporia, Virginia native and also had a seven-year career in the National Football League, during which he won a Super Bowl Championship with the New England Patriots in 2001.
Parker was known for his ability to connect with students and teachers alike. “He was such a humble guy. He understood the love for kids,” said George Wythe High School teacher Jewel Hairston. Principal Parker was preparing for the first day of school in just 10 days when he died suddenly on Friday. The cause of death has not been released at this time.
Parker’s death leaves those who knew him reeling. Lundy, Parker’s friend, said that he is still in shock and finds it hard to believe that Parker is gone. Parker was an active member in his community and had plans to launch a mentorship program for young men at George Wythe High School in the upcoming school year.
Lundy said that Parker was always looking out for others and that he hopes people remember him as someone who loved people selflessly. Kamras, the superintendent of Richmond Public Schools, also expressed his shock at Parker’s sudden death and praised him as a passionate advocate for students. Parker’s loss is a tragedy for his community and will be felt deeply by those who knew him.
