Eileen Ryan was a veteran American actress who was a popular name in Broadway, film, and television industry. She was born on October 16, 1927 in New York City. She was the daughter of Rose Isabel, who was an Irish American nurse from Plattsburgh, NY, and her father was an Italian American.

Eileen Ryan’s Personal life

Eileen Ryan was the widow of late actor and director Leo Penn. Eileen met her husband, Leo Penn, in 1957 in New York City at rehearsals for “The Iceman Cometh.”  Both of them tied the knot within a week of their meeting, and they remained married for 41 long years until Leo’s death in 1998.

The legendary actress was the mother of actor Sean Penn, 62, and musician Michael Penn, 64, singer of the late ’80s hit single “No Myth.” In addition to them, the couple were parents to late actor Chris Penn, who appeared in popular films including “Reservoir Dogs” and “True Romance.” Chris died at 40 years of age in January 2006.

Ryan was best-known for her roles in films including “Parenthood” (1989), “Magnolia” (1999), “Eight Legged Freaks” (2002), “Feast” (2005), “All the King’s Men” (2006). She also appeared in several films alongside her sons, including “At Close Range” (1986), “The Indian Runner” (1991), “The Crossing Guard” (1995) and “I Am Sam” (2001).

Some of her most notable appearances on the small screen, were on shows such as “The Twilight Zone,” “Bonanza,” “ER,” “Little House on the Prairie,”  “NYPD Blue,” “Ally McBeal”, “Private Practice,” “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,” and others. Her last on-screen credit was in 2016 in Warren Beatty’s “Rules Don’t Apply.”
