Cynthia Lai, a long-time realtor, and councilor for the city of Toronto passed away on Friday at 68 years old. Lai was up for reelection in the municipal election on Monday, but her campaign manager, Hratch Aynedjian, announced her passing on Friday afternoon.
According to Aynedjian, Lai passed away in a hospital while being attended by family. Lai first won the Ward 23 Scarborough North councilor seat in 2010 and was reelected in 2014. Aynedjian described her as a champion for her constituency which provided services to people in the neighborhood in line with the demographics of the ward.

First elected to Scarborough City Council in 2006, Councilor Lai was a passionate and dedicated public servant who worked tirelessly on behalf of her constituents. Starting on Sunday, condolence books will be set up in the rotundas of City Hall and the Scarborough Civic Centre for anyone who wishes to write in. The family has requested privacy at this difficult time, and no further statement will be made. Councilor Lai will be greatly missed by all those who had the privilege to know and work with her.
