Columbia, S.C– Tyrell Owens Riley, a Columbia police officer, died on Saturday evening after a medical emergency during a fitness assessment. Read on to know what happened to Tyrell Owens-Riley, how did he die, and what was the cause of his death.
Columbia Police Department is mourning the loss of its obedient officer to a medical emergency. Riley’s funeral arrangements are still being established and will be announced later.
How did Tyrell Owens Riley die?
Master Police Officer (MPO) Tyrell Owens Riley from Columbia suffered a medical emergency during a CPD Specialized Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Assessment on Saturday, September 24, 2022.
He was rushed to the hospital by the EMS. However, the medical examiner pronounced him dead upon arrival. His demise was triggered during a fitness assessment at the SWAT facility.
Columbia Police Department has released a statement on Tyrell Owens Riley’s passing:
“During the physical fitness training portion of the assessment, MPO Owens Riley became ill.
“He was transported by EMS to Providence Hospital downtown where he suffered cardiac arrest and could not be revived.”

Tyrell Owens Riley Cause of death Explained
Tyrell Owens Riley died of a cardiac arrest that he suffered while undergoing a fitness assessment at the SWAT facility. The department has announced cardiac arrest as Tyrell Owens Riley’s cause of death.
He was taken to the hospital by the EMS where the doctors confirmed that the physical fitness portion of the assessment caused him to suffer a cardiac arrest.

Who was Tyrell Owens-Riley?
Tyrell Owens-Riley was a Master Police Officer (MPO) at the Columbia Police Department (CPD) for the past seven and a half years. He was most recently assigned as a patrol officer in the Metro region.
The Columbia native had been serving in the United States Marine Corps. He was a young man who belonged to the black ethnicity.
CPD has brought the flags at half-staff to mourn the loss of their venerated police officer. His patrol car has been draped in black along with mourning flower bouquets.
