On his final day working for CNN, Harwood praised President Biden’s speech on threats to democracy, “The core point made in that political speech about a threat to democracy is true.” He also mentioned, “Now that is something that is not easy for us as journalists to say.”
The exact reason for his leaving is not disclosed, while Harwood’s departure is likely to fuel questions about the fate of CNN Business. John Harwood is the second high-profile journalist to depart CNN in recent weeks. Media critic Brian Stelter exited CNN after the network’s new chief executive, Chris Licht, canceled his show Reliable Sources. He as mentioned in his last show in the air referring former president calling Donald Trump “It is not partisan to stand up to demagogues,”
With the acquisition of CNN parent WarnerMedia in April, Warner Bros Discovery was formed. Since then quick changes were introduced in the network, David Zaslav, chief executive, shut down the streaming platform CNN Plus just weeks after its launch.
More highlights from Harwood’s journalism journey!
It was in 2020, John Harwood joined CNN just about a year before Trump supporters mounted a deadly attack on the US Capitol in a desperate attempt to prevent the congressional certification of the former president’s electoral defeat to Biden. Since Harwood joined CNN he has been a frequent critic of Donald Trump, former US president. He also called him a “dishonest demagogue” in a report recently.
Before CNN, he was the chief Washington DC correspondent for CNBC, he drew significant attention in 2019 for another remark that was critical of Trump and his Republican supporters.
CNN has denied giving any comment on Harwood’s departure and has said in a statement “We appreciate John’s work covering the White House, and we wish him all the best.”
While it’s not yet clear what will be new opportunities Harwood will be taking, it’s clear that John Harwood is an experienced journalist who will be missed by CNN.
