A series of shootings were reported in Memphis in the US on Wednesday, September 7, by a 19-year-old teenager, Ezekiel Kelly. The teen suspect was arrested after killing four citizens and injuring three others—one of which he live-streamed on Facebook.
During a late press briefing on Wednesday, Police Chief, Cerelyn “C.J.” Davis, said, “This has been a horrific week for the city of Memphis,” while announcing Kelly’s alleged shooting rampage.
Due to the shooting rampage, Memphis went on a lockdown for over two hours on Wednesday night, after the police revealed that a man was driving around the city and shooting at people. Who is Ezekiel Kelly?
Ezekiel Dejuan Kelly is a 19-year-old teen who has a violent criminal record. He is currently under custody as the suspect in the mass shooting in Memphis on Wednesday evening.
Kelly was taken into custody after the police issued an arrest warrant for him under a charge of first-degree murder as the search wound on. He has been charged with killing four and injuring three people in his shooting rampage.
Ezekiel’s criminal background
According to the court records, the teen suspect has a violent background. Kelly has faced four felony charges, which included two counts of attempted murder, one count of reckless endangerment, and one count of possession of a firearm in 2020, at the mere age of 17 years.
Ezekiel was given a three-year sentence for attempted first-degree murder in June, 2020. He was released from jail in March after serving just 11 months. The reason for his early release is not known.
Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland also slammed the courts for Kelly’s early release. He said, “If Mr. Kelly had served his full three-year sentence, he would still be in prison today and four of our fellow citizens would still be alive.”
During his shooting rampage on Wednesday, Kelly posted on his social media that he wouldn’t return to jail.
More about the incident
The police chief said that Ezekiel Kelly, 19, launched his alleged rampage just before 1 a.m., as he allegedly shot and killed a 24-year-old man in his driveway on Glendale Avenue at 12:56 a.m. Several hours after the initial homicide, he allegedly shot and killed a man sitting in his car on South Parkway East at around 4:38 p.m. He then reportedly fired his gun at a woman who suffered a wound to the leg and was later transported to a nearby hospital in stable condition.
Just before 6 p.m., Kelly opened fire at an AutoZone store on Jackson Avenue and streamed the attack live on his Facebook page, the police confirmed. The University of Memphis also alerted all the students at around 7:31 p.m. that a shooting had been reported about 4 miles away from the campus and advised all the students to shelter in place.
Memphis police cautioned people to look out for Kelly in a grey Toyota with an Arkansas license plate AEV63K. They informed the public to watch out for a man driving all around the city and firing shots.
Kelly terrorized the city until after dusk in a similar fashion by carrying out attacks on people at different locations, killing 4 and injuring 3 others. After all this, he was eventually arrested in Whitehaven, roughly 11 miles from the University of Memphis, during a police chase at about 9:30 p.m. According to the police, the alleged killer, Kelly, is connected to eight separate shootings in the city, and they have recovered two weapons from him.
