It is with a heavy heart that we must report the passing of 23-year-old TY Wells. Ty was a former Arizona swimming star who competed from 2018 to 22 and was still listed on the team roster at the time of his death. Keep reading to get more information about him.

Who was TY Wells?

He was a breaststroke specialist for the Wildcats in his fifth season with the club. During his four years as an Arizona swimmer, Ty showcased exceptional talent and dedication to his sport. He earned quite a few impressive accolades during his college career. Among these are being crowned Pac-12 champion in 2020, 2019 NCAA runner up, three-time All-American in 2019, Pac-12 All Academic Honorable Mention in 2020, and Pac 12-All Academic Honorable Mention in 2021. In addition to that, he also held several school records such as 200y breaststroke relay record (2020), 400y medley relay record (2020), 800y free relay record (2019) and 100y breaststroke record (2018). It is clear that Ty was an extremely talented individual who had so much more potential to give to the world of competitive swimming.

TY’s Legacy

The University of Arizona swimming community is deeply saddened by this tragedy and has offered their sincere condolences to TY’s family. Arizona Athletics Director Dave Heeke released a statement saying “We are shocked and saddened by the news of TY’s passing today.” He further expressed how difficult it is to process such an unexpected loss adding “Our hearts go out to TY’s family during this incredibly difficult time.” The university will be creating an endowment fund in honor of Ty to continue providing support for student athletes like him who demonstrate excellence both in academics and athletics. This will ensure that his legacy lives on forever through future generations of Wildcats swimmers.

TY Wells was a powerful force to be reckoned with in the swimming world of Arizona. He was an integral part of the Wildcats team, having competed from 2018 to 22 and listed on the team roster up to his passing last Friday.
