Smash actress Megan Hilty’s family has been struck with tragedy as Megan’s sister, Lauren Hilty, and her family have died after being among the victims of a plane crash near Seattle, Washington, on Sunday, September 4, 2022.
Megan’s sister Lauren Hilty, along with her husband Ross Mickel and daughter Remy, were among the nine passengers who were on a float plane when it suddenly crashed into Washington’s Puget Sound near Whidbey Island.
Megan’s brother-in-law Ross Mickel, was a well-known winemaker and owner of Ross Andrew Wineries. While giving their comments on the tragedy, Mickel’s family also confirmed that Lauren Hilty was pregnant at the time of the crash.

Who is Megan Hilty?
Megan Hilty is a 41-year-old American actress who is best known for the role as Ivy Lynn on the NBC musical drama Smash. Megan was born on March 29, 1981 in Bellevue, Washington. She has been married to Brian Gallagher since 2013, and the couple have two children together.
Following her graduation from Carnegie Mellon University, Megan moved to New York and made her Broadway debut by taking over the role of Glinda the Good Witch from Jennifer Laura Thompson.
Hilty played Glinda the Good Witch in Wicked, and sang in 9 to 5: The Musical, Little Shop of Horrors, Annie Get Your Gun, and more. She joined the aforementioned series in 2012. Hilty appeared in all episodes of Smash’s two-season run before it was cancelled by NBC.
Megan was nominated for a Tony Award in 2016 for Best Featured Actress in a Play for her role as Brooke Ashton in Noises Off. She is also a recipient of the National level Society of Arts and Letters Award for her Excellence in musical theater.
Following Smash, Megan has mostly done voiceover work, as she can be heard as KC the Koala on T.O.T.S., Prisma on Sofia the First, Ziggy on Madagascar: A Little Wild, and multiple characters on Trolls Topia.

According to an official statement by the U.S Coast Guard, Megan Hilty’s sister Lauren, brother-in-law Ross Mickel, and their child Remy were killed as they were among the passengers aboard the tiny aircraft that dipped into the Puget Sound near Whidbey Island on September 4.
The U.S. Coast Guard confirmed the names of passengers by a press release on Tuesday, September 6. The authorities also revealed that they have recovered one woman’s dead body up to this point. All the remaining nine people on board are still missing, but they are presumed dead.
Cause of the crash?
According to the reports, the crash of the single-engine de Havilland DHC-3 Otter occurred about halfway between the tourist destination Friday Harbor on the San Juan Island and Renton Municipal Airport. However, the actual cause of the plane crash is unknown. Smash actress Megan Hilty has not spoken anything publicly about the tragedy, but her brother-in-law, Ross Mickel’s family released a statement.
Mickel Family reacts to the tragedy
“We are deeply saddened and beyond devastated at the loss of our beloved Ross Mickel, Lauren Hilty, Remy and their unborn baby boy, Luca. Our collective grief is unimaginable. They were shining lights in the lives of everyone who knew them. Although their time with us was too short, we will carry their legacy forward,” Mickel family said in a statement.
The family also thanked the United States Coast Guard and other first responders and citizens who gave their assists in the search and rescue efforts. Additionally, the Mickel family added that, “The enormous outpouring and support we have received from our friends, family, and the public has really been overwhelming. Our hearts go out to all those families and friends who also lost loved ones on-board. At this difficult time, we are requesting that our privacy be respected as we grieve the loss of our family members.”
