Paul McCartney has paid tribute to his brother-in-law John Eastman, who has died at the age of 83.

Eastman was the brother of McCartney’s first wife, Linda, and a lawyer who represented Paul.

“Having known each other for over 50 years it is an extremely sad time for me, and our families,” McCartney wrote in an Instagram post that included a photo of them together.

“John was a great man. One of the nicest and smartest people I have had the good luck to have known in my life.”

McCartney said Eastman was like a second father to him, and recounted some of their fondest memories together.

“We had so many fun times together, both working and when we were just relaxing,” he wrote.

“John always had time for a chat and a laugh and I will miss him dearly.”

Eastman is survived by his wife, Nancy, and their three children.

McCartney said the family is in his thoughts.

“My love and sympathies go out to Nancy and their children at this sad time,” he wrote. “John will be deeply missed by all who knew him and loved him.”

Eastman was a prominent attorney in the entertainment industry, and represented McCartney in his landmark copyright case against The Beatles’ publisher, Northern Songs.

He also served as chairman of the board of directors for the Paul McCartney fan club.
