About NDLEA

By Decree No. 48 of the 29th of December 1989, a federal law enforcement agency known as the NDLEA was created. The order was issued primarily in response to the growing demand for and trafficking in narcotic narcotics and psychotropic substances, which in the 1980s had a negative impact on Nigerians’ reputations abroad. Since then, the trafficking of illegal substances has developed into an organized crime that threatens the nation’s security and economic growth, necessitating immediate response and top priority from the government.

>Top Ugliest People In The World<

In Nigeria, the NDLEA is in charge of drug policy and management. The Agency is mandated to stop the illegitimate production, importation, exportation, sale, and trafficking of psychoactive drugs within its umbrella. Interdiction and destruction of illegal drugs and other substances are performed by NDLEA employees. They also take part in drug addiction prevention initiatives like advocacy, counseling, and drug user rehabilitation.

NDLEA Programmes

Here are 2 active ndlea programmes.

OFFENSIVE ACTION PROGRAMME

A nonstop, intensified push to cut down on drug supply is known as an offensive action. Launched on January 18, 2021, it inspired NDLEA agents to operate around the clock in smooth, coordinated, goal-oriented operations, including tracking down and apprehending drug dealers, stopping the transportation of illegal substances, and expediting legal action against offenders.

WAR AGAINST DRUG ABUSE (WADA) PROGRAMME

President Muhammadu Buhari began the War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) advocacy campaign on June 26, 2021, in an effort to raise awareness and instill an anti-drug attitude in society. The federation’s States, LGAs, and municipalities must establish coordinated anti-drug committees.

CHAIRMAN/CHIEF EXECUTIVE NDLEA

On January 15, 2021, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd), OFR, was named the 11th Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA. On January 18, when he returned to work, he immediately got to work by announcing the beginning of Offensive Action.

Before joining NDLEA, Marwa had a distinguished military career that saw him hold a number of significant positions throughout the military establishment, including those of Brigade Major with the 23rd Armoured Brigade, Academic Registrar at the Nigerian Defence Academy, Deputy Defense Advisor at the Nigerian Embassy in Washington, DC, and Defense Advisor at the Nigerian Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York.

He was well-prepared for the turnaround mission at the NDLEA thanks to his prior experience as Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee on the Elimination of Drug Abuse (PACEDA) (2018–2020). As a result, Marwa got started right away as the NDLEA Chairman with a number of measures meant to revive the Agency.

He quickly reenergized the NDLEA with a stepped-up drug supply reduction campaign that resulted in over 10,000 arrests, 1,000 convictions, over three million kilograms of various substances, and cash valued at over N120 billion being confiscated in just 10 months.

AGENCY SECRETARY NDLEA

On September 9th, 2019, Shadrach Haruna was named Secretary of NDLEA. He has extensive experience in justice administration, and civil and criminal law advocacy, and is a practicing international lawyer. Until August 8th, 2019, he served as a legal adviser and criminal justice expert at the Commonwealth Secretariat in London, where he focused on transnational and international crimes and frequently gave technical assistance and training to criminal justice officials (law enforcement agencies, prosecutors, and judges).
