On January 26th, 2023, the community of Dunedin was saddened to learn of the passing of long-time city councillor and Mosgiel-Taieri Community Board member Maurice Prendergast. He was 83 years old at the time of his death. Who was Maurice Prendergast?
Maurice Prendergast’s political career began in 1989 when he was elected to the Dunedin City Council on a platform of supporting economic growth and developing infrastructure such as roads and public transport systems. Maurice worked closely with other councillors such as Peter Chin and Dave Cull in his role as Deputy Mayor during his three-year term from 1995 to 1998. During this time he championed initiatives such as creating more jobs for youth, improving housing availability and quality, and investing in tourism projects – all contributing to a more vibrant Dunedin region.
In 2013 Maurice stood for election to the Mosgiel-Taieri Community Board and won by a wide margin. As one of the oldest members on the board at 77 years old (he continued serving until age 80), many younger members looked up to him for leadership and guidance. During his term he oversaw numerous initiatives that improved life in Mosgiel-Taieri including new playgrounds for children, upgraded footpaths around town, improved facilities at local schools, upgrades to water systems that reduced water wastage and pollution levels, among many other projects that have benefited the community over the past eight years.
Maurice was known for being an outspoken advocate for what he believed in but also had a warm personality which made him well liked by all who knew him or worked with him over the years. He will be remembered fondly not only by those who knew him personally but also by everyone whose lives were positively impacted by his dedication to public service over two decades of involvement in local politics.

it is sad news that we lost Maurice Prendergast on January 26th 2021 due to natural causes at 83 years of age after almost two decades devoted public service , we are grateful for all he contributed during his time here with us . His legacy will remain alive through those who continue working hard towards making our region better place live . He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered .
