Matt Shrake dead and obituary : Beta Mu Chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha mourn the death of Matt Shrake ‘22

The Beta Mu Chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha at the University of Texas at Austin is mourning the loss of their beloved brother Matthew Garrett Shrake AKA Matt Shrake. An embodiment of a true PIKE, he embodied four qualities—scholar, leader, athlete, and gentleman—and carried an infectious smile that lit up any room he entered. Despite his short time as an active member in the fraternity, Matt had already left an indelible mark on his brothers forever. His untimely passing has left the fraternity deeply saddened and uncertain about the cause of death. Rest in peace, Matt–your memory will live on in our hearts and memories.

Tributes and Remembrances from Fellow Brothers

Matthew’s passing has left a deep sorrow in the hearts of all who knew him. His fraternity brothers have paid tribute to Matt as they remember his life. One brother wrote on social media that “Matt was always so positive and uplifting; no matter what happened in my own life I could always count on him to bring me back up with his humorous stories and jokes.” Another remarked that “he was such an amazing guy, always making sure everyone around him was taken care of before himself…his death has left us all devastated and heartbroken but we are stronger together than ever before because we are all united in our love for Matt.”

The Beta Mu chapter held a candlelight vigil in honor of their cherished brother on February 2nd. Hundreds gathered around the university chapel to share memories of Matt with one another and light candles in his memory. Many members wore shirts with “RISE UP” printed on them – this phrase was something Matt frequently said when encouraging others during difficult times. During the vigil, several brothers gave speeches about how much Matt meant to them and reminded those present why it is important to cherish every day as if it were your last.
