Luke was an active member of his community, attending Somonauk High School, where he played football and volunteered for various causes. He was also known for his involvement in many extracurricular activities at school, including 4-H club, DECA business program, student council, mock trial team, and choir. Everyone who knew him admired him for his kind heart and generous spirit. His coaches described him as a “bigger-than-life” personality with a football passion that shone through every day on the field. His teachers said he had a high chance of success in whatever he chose to do with his life.

The tight-knit community of Somonauk, IL., is currently grieving the sudden loss of a cherished teenager, following a tragic three-vehicle accident on Monday, March 20, 2023. Sixteen-year-old Luke Wernsman was involved in the collision, which remains under investigation as authorities work to uncover the cause of his untimely death. Preliminary reports suggest that Luke veered across the center line of traffic, striking two other vehicles in the process. Despite the severity of the incident, the Sheriff’s Office has thankfully confirmed that no additional injuries were reported. The town of Somonauk is undoubtedly rallying around one another during this difficult time, as they desperately search for answers and seek to fill the void left behind by Luke’s passing.

Visitation will be held on Friday, March 24th from 4:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m., at Harvest Chapel Church in Sandwich with Pastor Shane Stoddard officiating followed by a funeral service on Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m., also at Harvest Chapel Church in Sandwich..

In honor of Luke’s legacy, friends have started an online fundraiser which has raised over $10K so far to help cover funeral costs and establish a scholarship fund in his memory for college bound students from his high school each year – an incredible way to continue to honor him long after he is gone! Those who knew him best say that this type of gesture would have made him proud as he always wanted to make sure others had what they needed most whether it was money or just someone to talk too about life problems or issues they were having in school or at home.. Friends are also collecting donations for food baskets which will be delivered throughout the town following the memorial service this weekend – something those closest to him know would bring comfort to those affected by this tragedy during their time of grief.
