On Tuesday, June 27, law enforcement authorities in San Bernardino, California, announced that Sands’ remains had been “positively identified” after being discovered last week in a remote area of the San Gabriel Mountains. He died doing what he loved.
The British actor, 65, who appeared in movies like A Room With a View and The Killing Fields was reported missing in January. Evgenta Citkowitz, his wife, and their three children survive him.
Sands left his North Hollywood house on January 13 to trek by himself up Mount Baldy, which rises to a height of 10,064 feet. The New York Times said that Sands claimed to have ascended the peak about 200 times.
Later that day, as an atmospheric river enveloped much of Southern California, strong winds and snow pummeled the top. When Sands did not arrive at his house, authorities started looking for him. Authorities searched the mountain for Sands for days, trying to locate him on the summit using mobile phone location information.
The first search was also assisted by helicopter crews and aerial drones. However, severe weather made rescue efforts difficult, and the ground search was temporarily suspended because of the nearby avalanche hazard.
In the winter and spring, authorities conducted seven further searches for Sands, but none of the operations turned up any trace of the missing actor.
