Josephine Tewson was born on February 26, 1931, in Hampstead, northwest London. She attended grammar school before enrolling at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. She graduated from there in 1952.

Tewson started her career as a regular comedy performer in sketches featuring Ronnie Corbett and Ronnie Barker on David Frost on Sunday, and Hark at Barker (1969). She later appeared in Mostly Monkhouse, a BBC Radio Comedy program with David Jason.

Tewson also had minor roles in the 1960s shows like Z-Cars and The Charlie Drake Show. Her most memorable appearance came as Elizabeth “Liz” Warden, the nervous next-door neighbor of Hyacinth Bucket in six seasons of Keeping Up Appearances from 1990 to 1995.

She later played Miss Davenport in Last of the Summer Wine from 2007 to 2010. She also played Edna Hawkins (Mrs. H) in Shelley. Tewson had become a staple of British television sitcoms.
