Who was James Hamby?
James Hamby, a native of Houston, Texas worked as a criminal investigator and the sheriff’s office’s Crime Stoppers coordinator. Reportedly, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 2005 after graduating from high school. He has consistently provided his services and was fully devoted to the department without taking any time off.
Before joining the U.S Marine Corps, he was in the military for ten years, serving on two separate deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. Hamby takes retirements after 12 years of service, and the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office hired him as a deputy in 2017.
Also, he completed his graduation from Richmond Community College with an Associate in Arts degree. Later Hamby also participated in the “No Barriers” event, and he created “Walk for a Purpose,” a three-phase walk at Hinson Lake to support disabled soldiers and others.

James Hamby’s death was made public by Sheriff Mark Gulledge on Thursday, November 17. He wrote a statement on his sudden passing “Detective James Hamby had died unexpectedly. He passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday night surrounded by his family members.”
A post by Richmond County (NC) Emergency Services reads: “Words cannot explain how much you will be missed in this county, particularly by your public safety family. We send our most heartfelt condolences to the men and women of the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, as well as the family of Detective James Hamby. You will certainly be forever in our hearts.”
