Who was John “Jake” Crouthamel?
Jake Crouthamel was the former Athletic Director of Syracuse University, New York. He served as the administrator between 1977 and 2005. He was a founding member who played a key role in the formation of the Big East Conference.
Crouthamel was the AD when the construction of the Carrier Dome began in 1979. It is known as the JMA Wireless Dome now. During Crouthamel’s reign, Syracuse won a national title in men’s basketball. They also won several other championships and titles.
These include eight national titles in men’s lacrosse, 12 football bowl appearances, and 22 overall Big East conference championships. Before being the AD, Crouthamel had served three years in the U.S. Navy and a year as the football coach at Mercersburg Academy.
The venerated man retired in 2005. He had been living in Centerville, Massachusetts, with his wife Carol. The couple later moved to Hanover in 2013. Crouthamel was inducted in to the Greater Syracuse Sports Hall of Fame in 2018.
