John Perkins, former Managing Director of Independent Radio News (IRN), has died. His family announced the news on September 10, 2022, with Perkins’ daughter Polly tweeting that her “lovely, sweet, kind, caring, justice driven, horticultural mad Father passed away in our arms this morning.”
Perkins had a long and successful career in radio, starting out as a reporter in 1974 and quickly moving up the ranks. He was involved in commercial radio from its early days and was instrumental in its development. He served as MD of IRN for 20 years before moving down in 2009.
Perkins’s Sucess Story!
In 1974, he helped to launch Radio City in Liverpool, which quickly became one of the most popular commercial radio stations in the country. From there, he went on to become the managing editor of LBC. By creating a network of reporters who could share their stories, he was able to provide commercial radio stations with a much cheaper option for getting their news. In addition, he also created a sustainable model for commercial radio news by making sure that stations could make money. As a result of his efforts, IRN has become the go-to source for commercial radio news, serving over 300 stations across the country.
