Her Professional Career 

Costa made his debut in the northeastern province of Bahia with future legends Veloso, Gilberto Gil, and Maria Bethânia. When they started the band Doces Bárbaros, they had all already achieved success as solo musicians. During the two decades of Brazil’s military dictatorship, their collaborative side project became a crucial counterculture reference. It sparked a record, tour, and documentary. Costa’s Awards and Achievements

Costa received a Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011. She recently took a break from performing to have surgery on one of her nostrils, yet she continued to perform until almost the very end. On December 17, she was supposed to perform in Sao Paulo. Although Costa continued her regular tour schedule, she postponed performances for the rest of November while she recovered from surgery to remove a nodule from her nasal tube. The cause of her passing was not disclosed by her publicity team.

On social media, Gil also expressed his sorrow over Costa’s demise.

“I’m very saddened and impacted by the death of my Gaúcha sister,” he tweeted.

She was “one of the best singers in the world, one of our foremost artists who brought the name and sounds of Brazil to the entire planet,” he wrote.

“The country… lost one of its great voices today.”
