Herbert Volney was a famous politician and government figure from Trinidad and Tobago. He was formerly associated with United National Congress but then launched his own party “We The People” in 2017.
Volney graduated with a Bachelor of Law degree in 1976 and got admitted to the Hugh Wooding Law School. In 1994, he became a judge of the Supreme Court of Trinidad and Tobago and served till 2010. He was also a member of parliament.
Volney also served as the Minister of Justice in Kamla Persad-Bissessar’s cabinet after leaving his post as a high court judge. Later, he also contested the general election under the People’s Partnership banner. In 2013, he was fired amid the Section 34 scandal.

Herbert Volney died on Wednesday, December 7, 2022, in the morning, at around 7:45 AM. He was 69 years old. The unfortunate news of his death was confirmed to us by a family member who revealed that the old man passed away just after waking up from his sleep.

What was the cause of the death of Herbert Volney?
As per the available reports, Herbert Volney died after suffering a heart attack this morning. He was known to have heart-related issues for a long time as he underwent heart surgery in 2010 just after retiring as a high court judge.
At the age of 69, Mr. Volney’s heart couldn’t keep up and he passed away earlier today. He was rushed to the hospital but the doctors pronounced him dead upon arrival.

“I have fond memories with Mr. Volney. I had the privilege of working with Mr. Volney. I was the leader of government business while he served in the government. I was always taken aback by his sense of humor,” said Oropouche MP Dr. Roodal Moonilal.
He added: “He was a colorful character. But I saw in him a deep love for his country. we always remained in contact through social media. I am extremely sad and we are grateful for his service to the country.”
“Always a quick wit, he often painted himself as the custodian of Catholic values in Cabinet and representing those with mixed heritage as he was equally proud of his Dominican roots,” wrote Dr. Devant Maharaj, another colleague of Volney.
Senator and Minister of Agriculture Avinash Singh also extended his condolences following the death of Herbert Volney. He wrote:
“We sat on opposing political parties but we were always cordial. Lately, he was very interested in my agricultural post of produce on my parents’ farm. I invited him to visit only a few weeks ago. May his soul finds eternal peace and his family find strength at this time.”
