It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden death of Paul Ryder, better known as the bassist for the Happy Mondays. Paul was found dead in his hotel room today, just hours before the band were due to take the stage at Kubix Festival in Sunderland.
He was 58 years old. Paul was a founding member of the Happy Mondays, and his distinctive bass playing was a key part of the band’s sound. He remained a member of the band until their final breakup in 2011. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time. Thank you for your support

Paul Ryder, the bassist for the British band Happy Mondays, has died at the age of 58. The cause of death is not yet known.
Paul Anthony Ryder was an English musician who was born on April 24, 1964. He was a bass player and a founding member of the Manchester band Happy Mondays. The band was formed in 1980, and they released their first album in 1988. Ryder’s biggest contribution to the band was his work on their sophomore album, “Bummed.” The album was a critical and commercial success, and it helped to solidify the band’s place in the Madchester scene. Ryder continued to work with the Happy Mondays until their dissolution in 1992. He died on July 15, 2022, at the age of 58.

Music star Paul Ryder, best known as the bassist for the band Happy Mondays, has candidly spoken about his past struggle with drug addiction.
In the beginning of the band’s career, Paul did not hide the fact that he had a history of drug addiction and admitted to using heroin.
He remarked before: “There was no Calpol available for the children. I’d down the entire bottle.”
When Paul’s youngest son Chico was diagnosed with cancer at the early age of 10, it was a dark point for Paul.
Paul says the following about that era: “I found myself having to instruct him on how to properly inhale the vapour that was produced by a cannabis vaporizer.
My struggles with substance abuse are well documented. I came so close to passing away. However, cannabis was the medicine that helped save my son’s life.”
Paul also discussed openly his sibling rivalry with Shaun, with whom he co-founded The Happy Mondays in 1980. Shaun was a founding member of the band.
He said, “Even though it’s absolutely true that Shaun is a lyrical genius, there are times when I look across the stage at him and think, “What a knob!” The band stated that the wild stories about what they got up to while recording their fourth album in Barbados were all hoaxes and spoofs. “None of those items were done by us,” they said.
Paul continued by saying that the two have engaged in a healthy sibling rivalry ever since they were children.
The guitarist, who was a resident of France, had this to say about Shaun: “He knocked me off of my bike when I was three years old, causing me to require medical attention.
“I still have the scars on my hands from when it happened, and every time I look at them, it makes me angry.
“Things were constantly heating up between the two of us.
“I was probably about nine years old when he took a crazed swing at me with his new golf club and split open my head,” the boy said.
Paul had a brief career in cinema, one of which was titled “Losing It,” during his time as a member of The Happy Mondays.
In addition to that, he was in a movie about the band. In the movie, which was called 24 Hour Party People, he played a gangster.
