He described himself as “right-leaning”, “center right”, or a “libertarian,” and voted for Bob Barr in the 2008 presidential election. Monson began his broadcasting career while he was still attending college at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma. In 1991, he was hired as an evening host by KIRO-FM in Seattle; two years later, he moved to afternoons where he remained until his death.
