Sione Veikoso was a 22-year-old offensive lineman at BYU. Born in 2000, Veikoso finished his first season with the team this year playing only a single game as a redshirt freshman. He spent his first collegiate season at Arizona State in 2021 before getting transferred here.

Before this, Veikoso spent 2018 to 2020 on a full-time mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Brazil. He was a giant man with a gentle heart whom everyone loved. Lately, he was working as part of a construction crew in Hawaii.

Firefighters were called to the scene and they started the rescue mission. Unfortunately, by the time they brought Veikoso out of the debris, he was already dead. The specific cause of death was not revealed but it’s likely due to an injury to the head or brain.

Veikoso was only 22 at the time of his untimely death in the tragedy. Two other people were injured severely but they are in the hospital getting treatment. Their condition is serious but stable at the moment.

Tributes were led by the BYU football family on Twitter. “On behalf of the entire BYU Football family, our thoughts and prayers are with Sione’s family and friends during this extremely difficult time,” they said in an emotional tweet.

“Rest in Love Sione. God be with you till we meet again.”

BYU head coach Kalani Sitake joined in with a heartbreaking message for the late player. “We are extremely saddened to learn of the tragic death of one of our brothers, Sione Veikoso. His passing is heartbreaking to all of us. We offer our deepest condolences and prayers to his family as we share in their grief. Our love for you is forever, Sione!” Sitake wrote.

Several other friends and teammates of Sione paid tributes to the deceased.
