Hampers was born and brought up in his hometown of Grand Rapids, Michigan. He studied at Ottawa Hills High School and later went to Western Michigan University for further education. He was a music lover since his childhood, and he sang vocals and played keyboard in the late 1960s for a band called the Soulbenders, whose song “I Can’t Believe in Love” was a local hit in 1967.
