Murdaugh arrested
Alex Murdaugh, arrested in September 2021 for staging his death, is currently held in a maximum-security jail cell in Columbia, South Carolina. As of March 2022, he faced approximately 75 counts, including Breach of Trust with Fraudulent Intent, Money Laundering, Computer Crimes, Forgery, Obtaining Property by False Pretenses, and Criminal Conspiracy. In addition, he was charged with Staging His Death.
Alex Murdaugh, a disgraced attorney in South Carolina, was charged with murder Thursday for deaths of his wife and younger son, who were killed in a shooting incident outside their home more than a year ago. Today (July 14), the charges were brought against Murdaugh.
Murdaugh was indicted on two charges of murder on Wednesday (July 13), after the grand jury deliberated over the evidence presented by the prosecution and determined “there was enough evidence to charge Murdaugh with two counts of murder, “… according to information provided by the Office of the Attorney General of South Carolina.
According to the indictments that were handed out by a grand jury in Colleton County, which is the county where the shootings took place, Murdaugh allegedly used a rifle to kill his wife and a shotgun to kill his son. After thirteen months of inquiry, the police have not disclosed the specifics of how they tied Murdaugh to the deaths; but if you’ve been keeping up with this case, you know that everything pointed at Alex.
Murdaugh is a murderer
Alex’s wife Margaret, also known as Maggie, was found dead in their home in June 2021, along with their son Paul, who was 22 years old. Alex Murdaugh, 54 years old, has denied involvement in the deaths on multiple occasions. He claims he was away visiting his sick mother and father when he returned home to find that his son and wife had both passed away.
Alex Murdaugh comes from a family in which male members have served as prosecutors for a five-county district and as leaders of influential private law firms for more than a century. The controversial lawyer was taken into custody in September after he ordered his former client Curtis Smith to kill him with a gun so his son could collect a life insurance policy worth $10 million. Smith was the attorney’s client at the time.
Only a few days after Paul and Maggie had been murdered, he faked his own death. After that, he began to face additional criminal charges, including accusations of money laundering and defrauding millions of clients and associates. These charges started to pile up against him after the initial arrest.
Indictments against Murdaugh continued in January 2021, bringing the total number of charges against him to 71. These charges allege that he stole nearly $8.5 million in wrongful death and wreck settlements from more than a dozen people. The state grand jury issued 23 new orders, including the same schemes but different victims.
A confession of judgment was filed in Hampton County in March 2022, in which attorneys admitted Alex’s liability regarding allegations involving the estate of Gloria Satterfield and agreed not to contest claims in civil court. The attorneys also stated they would not contest the claims in criminal court. Satterfield was said to have died in what was reported as a trip and fall accident at Murdaugh’s home in Moselle, which is located in Colleton County. Satterfield passed away in February of 2018.
The fatalities in June of 2021 caused the authorities to probe every aspect of Murdaugh’s life. It would appear from the findings of the inquiry that Alex was the one who was responsible for the deaths of both his kid and his wife.
