Who is Val Joyce?
Val Joyce is most well-known for being an RTÉ Radio 1 broadcaster during a career at Montrose, which lasted over half a century. He was the presenter of well-known shows, including “Airs and Races” and “Late Date.”
Val Joyce married Christina Murphy, an education editor and duty editor for the Irish Times who passed away in 1996. After a few years, Joyce had his second marriage and his second wife died just six years ago.

The late broadcaster, Val Joyce, started his career in the radio industry in the 1950s by hosting some of RTÉ’s sponsored programmes, which included one for the Irish Hospitals Sweepstakes, where he had previously worked as an accountant.
Joyce worked as a presenter of “Sound of the Light,” a radio programme that featured the music of the Radio Éireann Light Orchestra, which became the RTÉ Concert Orchestra.
During the 1960s, Joyce started “Pop Call,” Ireland’s first-ever phone-in pop request programme. He was also the presenter of Ireland’s Choice with Val Joyce on Radio 2 when the station was started in 1979.
The broadcaster combined his love for music and horse-racing when he started presenting the long-running Airs and Races programme on Saturday afternoons. This programme continued for many years during the 1980s.
Joyce hosted his last edition of the popular late-night music programme, Late Date, on September 1, 2006, after presenting the show for 15 long years. His show “Late Date” was dropped from the schedule along with other shows presented by Myles Dungan and John Kelly.

The voice that first lured me to radio as a child. His Late Date introduced me to so much incredible music (and Patron Saints), and the cadence and rhythm of his presenting style was always such a reliable joy.” “One of the greats,” he concluded.
