Who was Nelson Yap?
As a councilor for Lapu-Lapu City from 2005 to 2023, Nelson was highly respected by his fellow members and citizens alike. He was known as a staunch proponent for social justice, working tirelessly to ensure that everyone had access to basic necessities such as clean water and electricity. In addition, he was passionate about providing better education opportunities for children living in poverty. Many consider his greatest achievement to be his efforts in leading the construction of two public schools in impoverished areas which resulted in thousands more children being able to attend school.
Nelson also implemented several initiatives which aimed at improving healthcare access and quality in his city. This included setting up various health centers throughout the city as well as launching an anti-smoking campaign which led to a dramatic decrease in smoking rates among adults in Lapu-Lapu City. He was also instrumental in helping secure grants from international organizations which enabled him to launch several other public health initiatives such as free medical checkups for low-income families.
As if this wasn’t enough, he was also actively involved in many cultural events taking place within Lapu-Lapu City. From sponsoring musical competitions to helping set up libraries across the city, he did whatever he could do help promote culture within his community. His death has left an irreplaceable void within the people he served for so long; many will remember him fondly for all that he did during his time here on earth.
