Sir P.C. Mahalnobis, father of Statistics in India, established statistics in the country in 1955.At the same time in 1956 ,Bareilly College took the challenge in starting the studies of Statistics at degree level under the stewardship of Sri S.P. Saksena, then a faculty member of Mathematics, and acquired Post Graduate status in 1982 .The distinction being that the department of Statistics is the only department in the M.J.P. Rohilkhand University that offers courses leading to M.Sc./M.A. degrees.
The department due to its academic pursuits has been enjoying grants under COSSIP and COHESIP schemes of the U.G.C.. The U.G.C. has also placed the department on its P.G. development grant.
The department has a self sufficient library of its own. The department has taken several projects fruitful to the development of the society. Some of the results drawn on the basis of survey carried out by the department have been submitted to the respective sections of the town planning department.
The department has strength of five permanent faculty members who have specialised from different centres of India. The department has produced 19 Ph.D.s so far and five research scholars are currently registered for Ph. D.
Desirous students from different streams of study with Mathematics at intermediate level can offer Statistics, Mathematics and Economics for B.A. degree. The students from the science stream shall have to offer Statistics, Mathematics along with Physics, Chemistry or Economics as one of the subjects for B.Sc. degree. For doing P.G. in Statistics students must have Statistics as one of the major subjects for B.Sc. / B.A. level.
For the aspirants of M.C.A., the combination of Statistics, Mathematics and Physics is very useful and on the other hand the combination of Statistics, Mathematics and Economics has gained its importance for the students seeking careers in the fields of Management, Banking services, Economic services, Insurance sector and other related services. Statistics is also a very good major option for Indian Administrative Services, Indian Forest Services’ Pre and Main examination for it being a very high scoring subject.
The students possessing the Master’s degree in Statistics have a wide range of employment open to them like Indian Statistical Services (I.S.S.), Acturial Statistics ,Medical Colleges, Engineering Colleges, Management Institutes along with traditional employment avenues in State and Central government departments.
