This is the age of biotechnology. In fact it is the only discipline of modern science which is growing at a very fast rate. Keeping in view the importance of this branch of science our most dynamic and learned Principal Dr. R. P. Singh decided to launch this programme as vocational course at degree level under the scheme of the ‘Activation of Vocational Subjects’ by University Grants Commission, New Delhi.
The Department of Biotechnology was established in 1996 with a diploma programme, approved by M.J.P. Rohilkhand University Bareilly, founded under the leadership of Dr. S. K. Bhatnagar the then Reader, Department of Botany in Bareilly college and now Prof. and Head, Cell Biology at S.V.B.P University of Agriculture and Technology, Meerut. Later on, the Diploma course was upgraded to Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Biotechnology. Biotechnology at Bachelors’ Degree level was started in 1998-99 as one subject approved by M.J.P.R.University, Bareilly.
The department got permanent affiliation under the able guidance of Dr.Kavindra Singh, Head since 2008. Our syllabus includes most of the advanced branches like Gene Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, R-DNA technology, Cyto- Genetics, Microbiology, Animal Biotechnology, Instrumentation, Biochemistry, Immunology, Environmental Biotechnology and Tissue Culture. It aims at producing the candidates of high expertise having potential to cater the requirements of industries and institutions. For this purpose, the students are exposed to important practical exercises in various disciplines of Biotechnology. Quality education is provided to the students. Apart from regular teaching, specialized experts from various fields are invited for guest lectures. Students regularly give power-point presentations during annual seminar series.
The department has well qualified faculty members, properly designed infrastructure and very well equipped laboratory. Our students are well placed in research institutes and various industries related to food products, pharmaceuticals, tissue culture, floriculture and biofertilizers. Some candidates have also gone to other countries for higher studies after completion of their bachelor’s degree programme. The Principal and Management, Bareilly College, Bareilly have already sent proposal for M.Sc. Biotechnology in Department of Biotechnology.
